Description

Maintain the accessibility of your document when exporting it to a PDF. Keep the heading structure, alternative text, and labeling of lists, tables, and language.

Instructions

When exporting a Word document to a pdf, the goal is to do it in such a way that the accessibility of the document is maintained. This includes the heading structure, alternative text for images, and markup that identifies lists, tables, or the document language.

  1. Click on the File tab in the menu.
  2. Select the option Save as.
  3. Click on More options.
  4. Select the format pdf from the list.
  5. Make sure the checkbox Standard (publishing online and printing) is checked.
  6. Check the box: Create bookmarks using Headings.
  7. Check the box: Document properties.
  8. Check the box: Document structure tags for accessibility.
  9. If special fonts are used: Uncheck the box Bitmap text when fonts may not be embedded.
  10. Press Ok.
  11. Press Save.

Tip!

Don't print to pdf! This method of creating a pdf does not preserve the document's accessibility.
