Make the documents headings accessible
Description
Use the designated format templates for headings in Word. It improves the clarity and accessibility of the document, as assistive tools can interpret the content.
Instructions
A clear heading structure helps the reader to get an overview of the document content. The heading structure also makes it easier for screen reader users to navigate through the document content. However, for the heading structure to work correctly, it is necessary to use the designated style templates for each heading level. Otherwise, assistive technologies cannot interpret the levels of the headings.
- Click on the arrow icon to view all style templates in your document. You can find the icon under Home, in the Styles section.
- Place the cursor on the text that will become a heading.
- Click on the appropriate style template. Make sure to always follow the hierarchy of heading levels. Heading 1 should always be followed by Heading 2, Heading 2 should always be followed by Heading 3, and so on.
- To view the heading structure in the document: Go to the View tab in the menu.
- Check the box for Navigation Pane, under the Show section.
- Look to the left on the page. The heading structure in the document is displayed under Headings/Rubriker.
