Manage theme colors in Word

In Word, theme colors are used to create a consistent style in your document. Theme colors are a set of predefined colors that affect the appearance of your document's text, background, shapes, and charts.

1. Click on the color options button in the Home tab, under the Font section. The button features a letter "A" with a colored underline. Click on the downward-pointing arrow next to the button.
2. Beneath the button, you'll see a box with different color options. The six theme colors for your presentation are displayed in the palette at the top right. These theme colors are predefined and form the basis for all charts, shapes, and other content inserted into your document. The order of the six theme colors affects the content you insert. The first theme color, the one on the far left, is automatically applied to the shapes you insert into the presentation. For example, if you insert a chart with multiple colors, the order of those colors in the chart will match the order of the theme colors.
3. The rows of colors below the theme colors are gradients based on each theme color. These colors below your theme colors are Office's own shades of your colors and may differ from your organization's brand guidelines.
4. The colors under the Standard Colors heading are default colors. Do not use these as they do not belong to the template's theme colors and are predefined by Microsoft. They do not align with your organization's brand identity.
5. If you are missing a color in the color palette, you can add a color by clicking on More colors located below the standard colors.
6. In the dialog box that appears, called Colors, click on the Custom tab.
7. You can either enter RGB values or type a HEX code to achieve your custom color.
8. Click Ok.
9. Your custom color will now be located at the bottom of the color options under the Recent colors section.
