Remove empty tags in Adobe Acrobat Pro

Light

Description

If you mark objects as artifacts (e.g., lines, images, or decorative elements), empty tags are created in the tag structure. These must be removed for the PDF to be accessible.

Instructions

Empty tags in a PDF can confuse assistive technologies like screen readers, since they lack content but are still part of the structure. This can cause users to experience pauses or interruptions during reading. By removing empty tags, you create a clean and logical structure that improves accessibility.

  1. To remove empty tags from the document’s tag structure, right-click the tag in the tag panel.
  2. Select Delete Tag in the menu.
  3. Sometimes there are several empty tags after you have marked multiple objects as artifacts.
  4. Go to Document.
  5. Right-click the Document tag.
  6. Select Delete Empty Tags.
  7. Acrobat will search through the entire structure and automatically remove all empty tags.
